TO HELP PROPERTY OWNERS AND RESIDENTS. The Firewise USA® program helps homeowners learn how to best address wildfire risks to their property and surroundings.
Every year, devastating wildfires frequently occur across the United States, including our area. At the same time, population growth in high-risk areas is on the rise. While these fires will continue to happen, many communities are taking actions to help mitigate the risks of wildfire and increase the safety of their families and homes.
FIREWISE IS A 20 YEAR OLD NATIONAL PROGRAM managed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It is co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department of the Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters. At the state/regional level, our efforts are overseen by the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. And we are proud to operate with input and assistance from our local Rural Metro station #826 in Rio Verde Foothills.
Simply put, Firewise is a national recognition program for communities that take proactive measures to prepare for wildfire.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, FIREWISE IS YOU. In order to be successful we will need a significant percentage of the community participating! We will provide encouragement, motivation, support, and in some cases equipment and other assistance. We ask you to do your best, to bring your property into alignment with the Firewise program. Our current Firewise directors are Deb Catone, Lisa Collins, Shawna Comber, Darren Jeffrey and Rebekka Schwegler. We are working closely with Rural Metro Fire, representatives from the Firewise program and the Dept of Forestry and Fire Management, and others. We will bring you more information about the team as we update and expand our website.
